CHICAGO-When Roland Talanow, MD, PhD, began his radiology residency, the topic of cancer staging proved to be particularly confounding. In an effort to educate himself and help others, Dr. Talanow has built a free, Web-based database that offers one-stop shopping on cancer staging, including comprehensive information on lymphoma, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and HIV-related lymphoma. Dr. Talanow showcased his Web site, www.cancerstaging.info, at RSNA 2008 (abstract LLR03001-H).

“I wanted to create a communication tool that would provide a better way to access staging information,” Dr. Talanow told Oncology News International. He is currently a fourth year resident at the Cleveland Clinic. “The main focus of the site is as an education tool for radiologists, but I hope it also benefits clinicians. I wanted to provide a better interface between radiologists and other specialists,” he said.

The Web offers users a “simple version” that hits the highlights of the disease state as well as an “extended version” that includes American Joint Cancer Commission (AJCC) classification information. The lymphoma section, for example, also offers clinical and histological findings and a staging subclassification system. Each section is rounded out with linked references and standard treatment options. Finally, there is a list of latest publications on a topic generated through PubMed Reader.

The link to www.cancerstaging.info can also be exported to a desktop. Registration is required but is free. Dr. Talanow said that he plans to update the site at least once a year and that he welcomes user input.
