LOS ANGELES--Avon’s Breast Cancer 3-Day is a new type of fundraising event--the first-ever multiday long distance walk. On October 23, 24, and 25, 1998, nearly 2,000 people in California will walk 50 to 60 miles (15 to 25 miles a day), beginning just south of Santa Barbara and ending just north of Malibu. Each participant has pledged to raise a minimum of $1,700 to support breast cancer awareness and education.

The walk is part of a larger, nationwide program called Avon’s Breast Cancer Awareness Crusade. Its mission is to provide women across the country, particularly those who are medically under-served, with access to a full range of breast cancer education and early detection screening services.

Net proceeds from the money raised by the walk will be awarded to nonprofit breast health programs nationwide through The Avon Breast Health Access Fund, administered by the National Alliance of Breast Cancer Organizations (NABCO). Avon has raised $25 million for the fund since 1993, and has made grants to 288 programs.

Because Avon’s Breast Cancer 3-Day is a walk, not a race, each participant will go at his or her own pace. Even so, the walk will be an arduous task for many. To help participants prepare, each has been assigned a walk coach who will provide support and tips throughout the training process. Additionally, walkers can join special training clubs that will organize practice walks before the event.

The walks will be supported by crews who will provide water and refreshment stops, meals, showers, tents, and transportation of gear. For further information about walking, volunteering, or making a pledge, call 888-332-9286.
